List of parts to convert T series to A series
These are the bare neccessities for the swap into a TE series chassis,
assuming that you can get a 4A-GE from a Corolla GT-S
- A 4A-GE, complete with computer and wiring harness ($400)
- Crossmember from 1983 corolla w/ 4A-C motor ($25)
- Radiator from 1983 corolla w/ 4A-C motor or Corolla GT-S
- upper and lower radiator hoses from 1985-1987 Corolla GT-S (AE-86)
- Bellhousing from 1985-1987 Corolla GT-S (AE-86)
- motor mounts, 1985-1987 Corolla GT-S (AE-86)
- rack and pinion set from 1983 RWD TE-7x Corolla; Make sure you get
the correct body style.
- Steering column from 1983 correct bodied TE-7x Corolla
- fuel tank, pump, sending unit, EFI fuel lines, fuel filter and high
pressure hose from AE-86
- wiring diagram (trust me)
- Black electrical tape and zip ties
If you get a 4A-GE from a mr2, here are the additional parts
that you will need, generall from the AE-86:
- 4A-GE, wiring harness and computer from mr2 ($1000-1200)
- intake manifold from Corolla GT-S with TPS.
- EGR system from intake to exhaust, all pipes
- water pump and fan with fan clutch
- water pump backing peice
- rear waterneck (connects to heater outlet)
- engine wiring harness from GT-S
- front water outlet from head to radiator, with sensors
- motor mount brackets
- alternator mounting brackets, top and bottom
- tranny-block stiffeners
- plate between tranny and block
- intake and exhaust manifolds from 1985-1987 Corolla GT-S (AE-86)
- a good, working block- check to see that ALL bolt holes are rust free!!!!!!!
Other things you might do at the same time:
If you wish to use the GT-S exhaust manifold, you must convert to rack
and pinion steering. Get the complete rack/pinion set from the correct
bodied 1983 corolla; Also you need the steering column.
I would advise changing belts, hoses and all that kind of maintenence
stuff while the motor is out...
Make sure that the pilot bearing exists, and that you have a good throwout
bearing. I always replace the clutch when I pull a motor; Worth the money
to just have it done then than have to pull it again later...
Interesting notes:
- The radiator does fit quite nicely upside down. Quite a conversation
starter as well. Bleeding out the air is a bitch this way though for obvious
reasons... You could alwyas be clever about it and install a tap at
the (now) top pf the radiator for filling and bleeding.
- The throttle cable can be replaced with a bicycle cable...
- The 4A-GE is SMALL in comparison the the 3/13T!!!
- Everything seems to sit in there weird; Just make sure the bolts line
up right and that everything is secure. It does work. But yes, it is
also canted slightly at an angle.
